I am planning to publish (on the web) a book about the life of my Grandfather that was finished but never published and is not likely to be published as this kind of life story no longer sells well enough for a publishing company to take it on.
Anyway, the problem I have is that I want to be able to format the document/s for various applications, so that it can be read on-line or downloaded as maybe a Word document or pdf (probably one per chapter). I don't want to have to re-format the document for different applications, as it is bad enough that the book only exists in manuscript form and will have to be typed (or OCRd) in the first place. It is around 800 A4 typewritten pages.
Any suggestions as to how I can make this work would be appreciated.

Re: Need help - site related (kinda)
Tue, September 30, 2003 - 7:09 AMFor print, InDesign allows the use of styles... which can help you reformat large chunks of text easily.
Beyond that, I'd suggest HTML with style sheets... you can do a lot with style sheets.
Maybe you post this question to one of the CSS tribes? -

Tue, September 30, 2003 - 5:49 PMYeah, I had figured that CSS was the way to go, but wondered if there was a way that would work cross-application without any extra effort on my part. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Need help - site related (kinda)
Wed, October 1, 2003 - 9:13 PMI think it's easiest to do it as plain text or simple html, and have links to downloadable text and pdf versions. (it won't be beautiful, tho) Do you have accompanying images? -

Re: Need help - site related (kinda)
Wed, October 1, 2003 - 10:27 PMI do plan to have images as part of the information, but have not decided whether they will be in-line with the text itself or as a separate section (which would probably make the back-end a bit easier) -
