Making our mark.

topic posted Mon, August 4, 2003 - 1:29 PM by  Silus
Hey everyone!

Looks like there's going to be some real interest in this group, which makes me really happy... maybe this could be the solution to all the MeTa threads about needed a place outside of Mefi to be a community.

Anyway, we're a smart and web-savvy group... and I hope that we can really make our mark on TRIBE.net.

I said it elsewhere, but I'll repeat myself here: if you really want to shape how this baby grows, get involved... and a good starting point is joinging the TRIBEIDEAS group (also in CULTURES & COMMUNITY).

Well, aside from scrambling to approve people (sometimes several times before the TRIBE database figures it out), I've not been up to much.

But, man, I sure am excited about this. Folks have been grousing for Metafilter to be a real community since its founding... but Matt has stuck to his guns, and kept the site about the content, and left the community building to us.

      So here we are!

      What do we do now?

      : )

I can post here now. It's so very fulfilling, just like I thought it would be.

So, to answer my own question: what's it for, what do we do?

Well... if you're going to stick around, I think it's really going to be because you've got plenty of other associations in the network: so I'd encourage you to join other tribes, or create ones (fishfucker, for example, could create one for artistic use of vulgar language!).

Then, I'd encourage you to think of things you need, or that you think others would be interested in... and then use the LISTINGS to get the word out to various networks: this tribe, your trust network (degrees of separation), or the TRIBE.net family.

Do you have something to sell? Do you need a room to rent? Do you have something you wished you could have announced, but were denied because of the embargo against self linking?

    Here's your chance!

Aside from that, I think that this forum will start out discussing Metafilter, and as we become more adept at using it, the scope of discussion will widen (considerably).

there's nothing fucking arty about fuck. it's unpretentious, blue-collar, and goes well with a Pabst Genuine Draft.

      that's why i like it.

poo-poo head, on the other hand, has real potential.

Methinks yer confusing PBR for MGD (unless there's some hybrid I don't know about). Me, I'm a High Life kinda guy.

wrong. Pabst makes a Pabst Genuine -- however, it is fairly difficult to find (try your local "warehouse" style stores that don't require membership -- the ones that usually sell non-national brand products? that's where i found the Pabst Genuine. for the record, as cheap beers go, it's pretty drinkable, unlike MGD, which is just god awful -- and don't even get me started on the High Life.)

PBR is so played out, see? you've got to move to the other Pabst products.

Speaking of making our mark... and concurring with DG on the absolutely vile nature of sub-threading within discussions, I'd like to get y'alls take on the issue.

If we can come up with a consensus, we could take that to TRIBEIDEAS... preferrably with suggestions.

Is this to be basically an extension of MeFi? if so, should we stick to MeFi usernames for the sake of those who are unable to keep straight who it is we are talking to at the best of times, never mind when we know them by different names in different places?

I really hope that this will be more than just an extension of Mefi... sure, this tribe is for mefiers, but I really hope that everyone here plugs into the larger community.
As for the handle, well, I guess that's a personal decision... handles are great and everything, but I really see this as an opportunity to get to know the folks behind the handles, so for me the handle issue is a toss-up.

I have NO idea what I'm doing

            Wed, August 6, 2003 - 6:36 AM
It seems like I can only respond to the latest response... or something? Oh well, I guess I'll figure it out. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that if, like me, anybody signed up with their real name thinking that they would get another window asking for their user name, you can change it under "account". I kind of hope that a lot of people will use their Mefi names so I can figure out who's who between the two sites...

    Hi everyone!

Like the tazinator, I would also be happy to see people using their Metafilterian name here. And I commend those of you who were good enough to put a real picture of yourselves in your profiles, just as I spit in rage at you cowards who cowardly hide behind cowardly pictures of inanimate objects. Sirus, as Obergruppenfuehrer of this tribe, you should be especially ashamed of yourself. A pox on you.)

That being said, I have to say that I'm positively surprised to see most of your faces. For some reason, I imagined a lot more pus-filled lesions and advanced-stage leprosy. It's nice to see so many beautiful mugs instead.

Finally, what exactly should we be posting here? Questions? Personal advice? Is this the place to come to if I need help installing BonziBuddy on my computer? Or to discuss tips on combating advanced-stage leprosy? Or something else entirely.

Some guidance would be most appreciated.

      tails, travails, and willy-nillyness

      Wed, August 6, 2003 - 10:24 PM
And, Ljubljana, I'd just like to say that you have a very beautiful curly tail! I'll put my photo up if we stick with this... I'll just have to pull out my catgirl suit and get my husband to dust off the ole pencam.

Here's a strange thing: I can only click on a few of the "reply to this" links that work; however, if I right click on any (I guess) I can open the "create new response" page in a new window. Weird. Anyway, I have a "help-me" question burning a hole in my pocket, but I'm shy about being the first to post a new topic when it's just about me. Me and my problem. Me. Me. And my site. (and me.) The no self-link taboo is too strong to just shake off all willy-nilly, y'know.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the self-link thing. It just feels kind of wrong to even think about it.

Maybe we need someone with absolutely no shame to start the ball rolling. *studiously avoids looking at wolfdaddy*

don't you wish wolfdaddy would wake up? damn these time zones.

Okay, this was really just an excuse to see if break tags work in here, because I think I'm going to try making a big-boy post (but not about my me-me question, yet).

I've got an ugly mug... and it looks even worse on camera, so a photo is probably out of the question.

    Sorry, folks.

If a photo ever does show up, there's a high likelihood that it will be of one of my photogenic roommates.

Anyway, Taz... shake all willy-nilly, and ask already... in the Metafilter tribe, self-linking is encouraged! How else will you get your questions answered, or bribe a tribe member to make an FPP of your link?

Of course, I'd encourage you to make any question or self-link the subject of a new thread.

Gotta have some semblance of order 'round here!

Support for linebreaks and the like is in the hopper... so bear with the Kero-wackiness.

You can generate LISTINGS (the CRAIGLIST-like posts) for the entire network (use the link in the LISTINGS tab), for just your friends and friends-of-friends (same link), or for just a particular tribe you belong to (there's a LISTINGS link on the tribe's home page).

Do you still have the addy for Mefi Projects? ... because that's a great idea!

here's what the email from kindall said:
To submit an item for publication in the weekly mailing, e-mail the following information to :
        1) Your MetaFilter user name.
        2) The name of the site.
        3) The URL of the site.
        4) A brief (up to 50 words) description of the site.

thanks for the info on the listings...maybe we can barter too, or swap?

Just wanted to say hi and thanks for posting this to the mefi projects list - that's where I found it! I'm 'Thunder' on MeFi, but only because I signed up early, before I got my site and my now typical online handle, foxvox. Since I'm more of a reader than a poster on MeFi, I figure that shouldn't be TOO confusing. :-) Anyway - great creation here!
