Wulfgar!! taz! amberglow! I'm feeling you all, but there is a serious name-mapping issue with the bulk of this tribe. J? Tom? Bill? While those are certainly memorable handles, I've missed you fine folk in the Blue, to the best of my knowledge.

Or have I?

For all we know we've exchanged numerous plo/karate chops in the Blue. Do I love you? Do I hate you? I'm dazzled by the possibilities of a viable off-site gathering spot, but WTFIW???

While it's obviously important for some of us to maintain a bit of a veil, perhaps a brief mention of your MeFi name & Tribe handle here in this thread would represent a minimal exposure.

So, there's this movie (which looks kinda cheezy) called Day After Tomorrow coming out at the end of the month. The premise is that global warming triggers sudden climate change, bringing down a whole can of climatic whoop-ass on the helpless peoples of the world.

Now, normally one would let this pass without comment, but given that there's next to no discussion of climate change and its implications in American politics these days, it seems a shame to let the opportunity to stir some debate pass by. The fundamentalists put the Passion on the top of the box-office charts: why can't we do the same thing with the Day after Tomorrow? Why should the fundies have all the fun?

Here's my take on it:
http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/000657.html

Anyway, the problem I have is that I want to be able to format the document/s for various applications, so that it can be read on-line or downloaded as maybe a Word document or pdf (probably one per chapter). I don't want to have to re-format the document for different applications, as it is bad enough that the book only exists in manuscript form and will have to be typed (or OCRd) in the first place. It is around 800 A4 typewritten pages.

Any suggestions as to how I can make this work would be appreciated.

Looks like there's going to be some real interest in this group, which makes me really happy... maybe this could be the solution to all the MeTa threads about needed a place outside of Mefi to be a community.

Anyway, we're a smart and web-savvy group... and I hope that we can really make our mark on TRIBE.net.
I said it elsewhere, but I'll repeat myself here: if you really want to shape how this baby grows, get involved... and a good starting point is joinging the TRIBEIDEAS group (also in CULTURES & COMMUNITY).

The DISCUSSION BOARD is the place for threaded posts, not unlike back at Metafilter, except that threads here can spawn children (ew).

LISTINGS, on the other hand, are for when you want to make an announcement to the entire group (a la Craigslist).

Have a new project you'd like us to know about? Make a LISTING... want us to comment on it? Make a DISCUSSION BOARD post. The LISTINGS are also great if you've got something for sale, or are looking for a roommate.

(Okay, then, Silus; here I go, shaking all willy-nilly.) Well. I have a site that gives away background tiles, and on the download pages for the backgrounds, I have a javascript that automatically tiles the background when you click on it. Like here. This function evidently does not work in Mozilla, and presumably not in Netscape. I've downloaded Mozilla and tried out all the scripts I can find that do the tiling gig, and so far have found nothing that works with Mozilla. So, is this just entirely an IE-only thing, and thus I will never find anything that will work with Mozilla, et al, because they simply don't have the tiling gene? Or is there some other way of doing this that will work in Moz?

It wouldn't really be a big deal at all, because it's only a little convenience, but I also have tiles that I call "OverAlls", which are semi-transparent so that you can use them over different background colors and get different effects. On those download pages I also have a mouse-over color changer color chart, so you can view the tiled backgrounds over different colors, and pick the one you want to use. <a href="http://www.citrusmoon.net/tile-a-day/oa018.html>Like here. It's really difficult to see what's going on with these tiles without the ability to view them over colors.

Can any of you mad-skillz folk help me out?

Okay, the burning questions here are who gets immunity? Who gets voted out? Who wants to eat live grubworms? Go, tribe Mefi! Eh, just kidding - but really, what are we doing here? I think that the tribe can be useful for asking advice and getting help, but the problem is that there might be some questions that are better asked anonymously. This could be anything from "looking for a new job" to quandries that involve very personal details. I have a couple of ideas about how we could address this, if we decide that this space is going in the help/advice direction.

Other than that? We can always swap Mefi gossip that really shouldn't be on Metatalk, and we can be very silly, which we do on Metatalk and then feel guilty over. We could link to sites that we think wouldn't make really good Mefi posts, but we still want to share. (I don't know. What do people normally do in these sorts of venues? I feel like the bride that went directly from her father's house to her husband's house - I've never been involved in any other community than Mefi-straightup.) Of course, we could do all these things, and more, but without the option to create categories, it's all going to be very higgledy-piggledy, no?
